Aspen One, the newly-named parent of the Aspen Skiing Company, Aspen Hospitality and ASPENX, hired David Tanner as CEO. Previously, Tanner was the CEO of Boardriders, Inc. and a partner at Oaktree Capital Management.

The Aspen One name and hiring of Tanner follows the death of Jim Crow, chairman and CEO of Henry Crown and managing partner of Aspen Skiing Co., on June 24. Crown’s widow and eldest daughter stated, “We are proud to announce Aspen One and the appointment of Dave Tanner as the CEO of the enterprise. When we met Dave, we immediately felt that he was the ideal person to lead us into the future, given his vision and values aligned to those of Jim and the family, his distinctive leadership experience and his strong track record. We remain deeply committed to the Aspen community, our employees and the values that have guided our company for the last 38 years.”

Tanner was named CEO of Boardriders in 2018 following the disappearance of Quiksilver CEO Pierre Agnes in southwest France. He stepped down in February 2021, replaced by former The North Face and Nike executive Arne Arens.

Tanner previously led the special situations team at California-based hedge fund Oaktree Capital Management, the investment firm behind the Quiksilver and Billabong merger in 2018 that established Boardriders.

According to Aspen One, during his tenure leading Boardriders, “Tanner led its platform through a six-year transformation that achieved 22 consecutive quarters of earnings growth.”

Earlier in his career, Tanner built and led Oaktree Capital Management, L.P., held several senior roles at Fortune Brands, Inc., was a consultant at McKinsey and Company, Inc., and began his career as a Major and senior pilot in the U.S. Air Force, including service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Most recently, Tanner served on the boards of several consumer companies, consulted others as a senior advisor with the Boston Consulting Group and taught as an Executive Fellow at Harvard Business School.

The creation of Aspen One supports growth and accelerates investment across hospitality, retail, experiences, and clubs. The company’s structure gives each business the bandwidth to focus on its operations, with Geoff Buchheister as CEO of the Aspen Skiing Company, Alinio Azevedo as CEO of Aspen Hospitality and Darcy Loeb as COO of ASPENX.
