According to a recent release by the Land & water Conservation Fund, more than $28 million was granted to states, territories, and the District of Columbia to create 17 new parks and acquire 13,313 acres of land and water during 2009.
Projects funded in 2009 include:
- Craig County, Va.: Residents will enjoy a new recreation complex on 18 acres of land instead of traveling more than 30 minutes to find a park with recreation facilities.
- Mount Paul State Park, N.J.: Grant helped acquire 1,143 acres of parkland with great hiking trails, open space, critical wildlife habitat and natural drinking water resources.
- Oso Bay, Texas: Grant helped acquire parkland and critical habitat for migratory birds at this nationally significant estuary.
