Mountain Equipment Co-op plans to  break ground this month on a 10,000-square-foot expansion of its 29,000-square-foot store in Westboro, near Ottawa, Ontario.

The store on Richmond Road was opened in 2000 using a smaller format than those used at the company’s stores in other major Canadian cities.  The expansion will allow the store to expand its bike and gear rental shops and offer more yoga, road running and children’s product.

As part of the remodeling, MEC is removing a 30-foot climbing wall.

“It takes space from our floor that could be filled with our product and it isn’t used as it can’t be staffed properly,” said MEC spokesperson Deborah Robinson.  “It will however be replaced with a small section that can be used to try on shoes – rather than a full wall where you need to get roped in.”

Mountain Equipment Co-op is Canada's leading retailer of clothing, gear, and services for active lifestyles, including climbing, hiking, cycling, running, camping, paddlesports, yoga and fitness. MEC has more than three million members throughout Canada, whom it serves through 15 destination stores in six provinces as well as at www.mec.ca
