About 53,000 electric bikes manufactured by Jetson Electric Bikes are under recall as the batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that two sisters, ages 10 and 15, were killed in a fire, and the company’s 42-volt Jetson Rogue started the blaze.
The event happened on April 1, 2022, near Allentown, PA. The fire spread from the room where the Jetson Rogue was stored to other parts of the house. The girls’ parents suffered smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
The authorities said there had been multiple reports of the recalled scooters/hoverboards burning, sparking or melting, several of which involved reports of fires.
Jetson Electric Bikes, based in Brooklyn, NY, is contacting all known purchasers, the CPSC said. Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, “there have been multiple other reports of the recalled scooters/hoverboards burning, sparking or melting, several of which involved reports of flames,” the recall said.
The recall involves all 42-volt Jetson Rogue self-balancing scooters/hoverboards. The model has two wheels with light-up hubcaps and comes in various colors. “Jetson” is printed on one side of the body and the top of the footpads.
Labels on the bottom of recalled Jetson Rogue Self-Balancing Scooter/Hoverboard show UL certification and a serial number but no barcode.
