Icebreaker plans to open up to 50 stores in the next five years, including its first one in New York City in September, according to a report in the Financial Times.


Icebreaker will celebrate the grand opening of its first Icebreaker Outlet store in North America. The 1,403-square-foot retail store is located at the Woodburn Company Stores in  in Woodburn, OR. Icebreaker also operates a store in Auckland, New Zealand.


The company's CEO Jeremy Moon is scouting locations in New York's SoHo neighborhood for the store, the newspaper reported.
The New Zealand maker of merino wool clothing sells 80% of its $94 million in annual sales in North America, where it already operates branded stores in Montreal and Portland.


Moon told the Times that Icebreaker will sell more than two million pieces of clothing in 2010. About half of those will be base layers.
