Assemblyman Martin Garrick of the 74th District in California declared family-owned Hansen Surfboards the “Small Business of the Year.” Each year the leadership of the California State Assembly recognizes the contributions that small businesses make to California by sponsoring “California Small Business Day” in the Capitol.

“I selected Hansen’s as the 74th Assembly District’s Small Business of the Year because the Hansen family’s commitment to excellence has developed into a strong business model,” said Assemblyman Garrick. “Ive had the opportunity to shop at Hansen’s over the years and appreciate their generosity through community programs like Goods for Grades which rewards kids for excelling in school.”

Hansen Surfboards is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and it has proven to be a pinnacle year. In addition to being titled “Small Business of the Year,” earlier this year Hansen’s was awarded “Women’s Retailer of The Year” by the Surf Industry Manufacturer Association (SIMA).

Besides running the store, Hansen Surfboards annually partners with “One Day Without Shoes” and “Soles4Souls” to raise funds and awareness for individuals who dont have the privilege of wearing shoes. Josh Hansen said, “Were doing this for the people who are going barefoot because they have no choice.”

“Soles4Souls” and Hansen Surfboards unite in a campaign that encourages the public to drop off its unwanted shoes at Hansen’s in exchange for 10 percent off a new pair of shoes or sandals for every pair donated at the store. Last year, with the help of the generous involvement from the community, Hansen’s donated 6,000 lbs. of shoes to the “Soles4Souls” campaign.

Hansen Surfboards noted that many of its employees have been with the company for more than 30 years and are like family. After 50 successful years, Hansen Surfboards still demonstrates how a “small business” can make a huge impact.

Founded in 1961, Hansen Surfboards is San Diego’s largest surf shop with more than 16,000 square feet of retail space. It also operates the www.hansensurf.com website.
