Garmin Ltd. completed its acquisition of Garmin Distribution Africa (Pty) Ltd. (GDA), the distributor of Garmin’s automotive, outdoor recreation, fitness and marine products in Southern Africa, and Garmap (Pty) Ltd., a South African mapping and mobile applications provider.


GDA will be renamed Garmin Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd. and will continue operations at its current headquarters and warehouse facility located near Johannesburg, which employs approximately 70 associates.


“We are pleased to complete this acquisition and we welcome our South African team into the Garmin family,” said Dr. Min Kao, chairman and CEO of Garmin Ltd. “This transaction will strengthen Garmin’s presence in this rapidly growing region and we look forward to closely supporting our retailers and customers in South Africa.”


Financial terms of the transaction were not released.


Since its inception in 1989, Garmin has delivered 88 million GPS enabled devices – far more than any other navigation provider. Garmin’s market breadth in the GPS industry is second to none, having developed innovative products and established a leadership position in each of the markets it serves, including automotive, aviation, marine, fitness, outdoor recreation, tracking, and wireless applications.
