Police shot and killed a man who stole a shotgun from a display case at a Big 5 store in Watsonville, CA and fired the weapon multiple times.

Lt. Terry Traub said a store employee called 911 just after 11 a.m. to say that the 22-year-old man man had come into the store on the 1000 block of South Green Valley Road and was looking at two rifles, according to the San Jose Mercury News. The employees refused to sell him the gun because the man didnt have identification.

Store employees said that the man then left the store and returned with a device that he used to cut through the gun case. Traub also said that it appeared he barricaded himself in the store, as police noticed a cable was wrapped around the handles of the front door.

As the man broke into the case, employees in the store called police. The call came in at 11:11 a.m. No other shoppers were in the Big 5 at the time.

After breaking into the case, the man grabbed a shotgun, broke off the safety lock, loaded it and fired it several times. Police did not specify who or what the suspect was aiming at. No employees were hurt.

Police confronted the man and shot and killed him.
