In early December, Emerald Expositions announced that the Interbike trade show will not take place in September 2019 in Reno, NV, as previously scheduled.
But the company was quoted in a recent Bicycle Retailer And Industry News (BRAIN) article that it is considering two options: Adding a bike trade show, a la Interbike, to the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market, scheduled for November 5-7 in Denver, or adding bikes to the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market Demo Experience, scheduled for June 17, also in Denver (the main Summer Market trade show takes place June 18-20).
Darrell Denny, executive vice president of Emerald Expositions’ Sports Group, told BRAIN that both options are still in the discussion phase.
“We are basically doing what we said we were going to do (when Emerald announced the Interbike cancellation). We said we weren’t going to proceed with Interbike as originally planned but are researching alternatives,” Denny told BRAIN on Thursday. “I’m hesitant to go into more details because we are still in the concept validation phase,” he said.
When Emerald announced the cancelation of Interbike, Denny said, “The past four years have been difficult for the U.S. bicycle market. The substantial increase in tariffs on bike related imports during 2018, and announced for 2019, is compounding these challenges. As a result, we are rethinking how to best serve the cycling industry and will conduct a review of the possible timing, locations and formats with dealers, brands, distributors, reps, designers and media over the coming months. Our goal is to develop and deliver thoughtful solutions which provide strong returns on investment for all industry participants.”
