The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, in cooperation with the National Shooting Sports Foundation, held the first Congressional Breakfast Briefing of the 111th Congress.

The breakfast briefing focused on H.R. 510 and S. 632: The Firearms Fairness and Affordability Act, companion bills recently introduced by Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus leaders in the House and Senate, which would make it easier for firearms and ammunition manufacturers to file excise taxes that support state wildlife programs.

“This change is long overdue and it makes tax reporting for firearms and ammunition manufacturers consistent with other industries,” said FAET House sponsor and former CSC Chairman, Rep. Ron Kind.

Members of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus including Co-Chair Rep. Dan Boren and Vice-Chair Rep. Mike Ross, former members of Congress, members of the CSF Board, representatives from NSSF, firearms and ammunition industry leaders and other members of the sportsmen’s community gathered in the Rayburn Building to discuss FAET legislation and other issues related to hunting and fishing.

“The reason our Caucus exists and the reason we are meeting today is to preserve and promote the right of citizens to hunt, fish, and trap,” said Boren. “We must protect the investment that sportsmen and women have made and recognize the importance of hunting and fishing to the national economy.”

In addition to the comments made by Rep. Boren and Rep. Kind, attendees also heard presentations from CSF President Jeff Crane, former Congressman Lindsey Thomas, NSSF President Steve Sanetti and Ron Regan of the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies.

“This morning’s briefing was a terrific opportunity for us to stress the importance of this excise tax legislation to the shooting sports community and to all sportsmen’s groups. We are grateful to the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus for introducing and working for passage of this critical piece of legislation.” said Sanetti.

“We host these briefings several times per year and we hope that everyone who attends, including members of Congress, leave here confident that CSF is on top of the policy issues so important to the future of hunting and fishing,” said Crane.

The next CSF Congressional Breakfast Briefing is scheduled for June 3rd.
