Workers at The New Era Cap Co. approved a tentative agreement providing wage and benefit concessions that will enable the company to keep operating its plant in the Derby area of Evans while closing one in Alabama. As reported, New Era in late January reached a tentative agreement with the
Communications Workers of America (CWA) to retain New Era’s Derby, NY
plant as the company’s sole U.S. manufacturing facility.
If the
agreement was ratified, New Era had said it will close its plant in
Demopolis, AL sometime in the second quarter of this year. The closing will now occur in April and company officials will begin meeting with the union today to discuss severance packages for the Alabama workers.
Employees represented by Local 14177, Communication Workers of America, voted, 197-57, to ratify the agreement announced last week.
