C&D Sporting Goods in North Carolina will be closing at the end of the year, according to Mount Airy News. The owners blamed a slow economy and increased competition.

According to the newspaper, James “Coach” Holleman, who launched the store in 1982. Holleman worked full-time at C&D Sporting Goods for 17 years during its run, and now is one of three owners of the business along with Rick Marion and Tommy Brannock. Holleman’s two sons, Jimmy and Mickey, also are longtime employees.

The article said that over the years, competition from larger chains such as Wal-Mart and Kmart undermined C&D’s business. More recently, introduction of Sagesport and Hibbett Sports outlets in outlying shopping centers further hurt revenues, along with the difficult economy.
