BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc.  today reported that sales for November 2010 increased by 8.0% to $900.1 million from $833.6 million in November 2009. On a comparable club basis, sales for November 2010 increased by 5.0%, including a contribution of 1.2% from sales of gasoline. Excluding gasoline, merchandise comparable club sales increased by 3.8%.


For November 2009, the company reported a comparable club sales increase of 1.0%. There was no impact from gasoline sales on comparable club sales.

The company provided the following additional information regarding comparable club sales for November 2010:

 

•Sales increased in all four weeks with the highest increase in week two.


•Comparable club sales increased in all major regions, with the strongest increase in the Southeast.


•Excluding sales of gasoline, traffic increased by approximately 3% versus last year and the average transaction amount increased by approximately 1%.


•Sales of food increased by approximately 4% and sales of general merchandise increased by approximately 3%.


•Departments with the strongest sales increases compared to last year included candy, cheese, dairy, deli, domestics, electronics, frozen, household chemicals, housewares, meat, milk, prepared foods, produce, small appliances, trash bags and video games. Departments with weaker sales compared to last year included baby food, computer equipment, diapers and pre-recorded video.
