BackcountryStore.com reported record sales for 2003, with an increase of 134% year-over-year versus 2002. The increase is the 7th year in a row of triple digit growth for the company. In addition, the fourth quarter of 2003 was BackcountryStore.com’s biggest to date, during which time the company also had record-breaking hours, days and weeks.

John Bresee, BackcountryStore.com’s co-founder, attributes the growth to a combination of factors. “Externally, it was a recovering economy combined with a larger group of people suddenly understanding the power of e-commerce,” said Bresee. “We continue to see more people being comfortable buying high-end outdoor gear on the Web.

“Internally, we believe that it was our ferocious dedication to a great customer experience and our innovative marketing programs such as the new catalog. 2003 was a year when things came together for us,” Bresee said.

Bresee also noted the increased activity in categories such as snowboarding, freestyle skiing, paddling and the emerging fast-and-light backpacking market.

For BackcountryStore.com, 2003 also saw considerable increases in important e-commerce metrics such as conversion rates, average orders, net profits, and site traffic.
