Shoe Carnival Inc. reported earnings and sales declined in the first quarter against challenging year-ago comparisons but were well above the pre-pandemic 2019 first quarter and topped Wall Street targets. The off-priced retailer raised its EPS guidance for the year.

April Sales Climb 8.2 Percent Year-Over-Year

The U.S. Census Bureau said overall retail sales in April were up 0.9 percent seasonally adjusted from March and up 8.2 percent year-over-year. That compared with increases of 1.4 percent month-over-month and 7.3 percent year-over-year in March.
