Astral released a limited edition of its iconic Layla PFD to acknowledge the dedication of its athletes and employees. Whitewater enthusiasts Nicole Mansfield, Kate Shea and Ollie Smithers designed the equipment reflecting their combined love of the water with the same safety and fit features.
Astral CEO and founder Philip Curry and Shirley Shepherd introduced the Lola 27 years ago as the first PFD designed for women. Later, he updated the equipment to work with the contours of a woman’s body and renamed it the Layla. The PFD features hinged seams, sculpted chest support, a side entry zipper, and the ability to add a quick release belt.
“The Layla PFD is an optimal choice for all levels of watersports enthusiasts. The craftsmanship, fit and versatility of this PFD is phenomenal, making it the ideal canvas to work from,” shared Smithers, Astral sourcing manager and kayaker. “This two-year project celebrates athletes of all levels and interests in the water, especially as they work through challenges.
Graffiti-style artist and member of the whitewater community, Kate Shea, was commissioned to showcase how water connects Astral to its community.
