Amazon is aiming to hire 250,000 U.S. seasonal employees during the 2024 holiday season, matching its 2023 target for the season.
In an Amazon announcement on October 3, the number includes full-time, part-time and seasonal roles in the company’s fulfillment and transportation operations, said Sandy Gordon, an Amazon vice president responsible for the employee experience in its global operations group.
Amazon recently announced a $1.50 an hour increase in average base pay for U.S. hourly workers, to more than $22 an hour. All seasonal workers will make at least $18 an hour, and full-time seasonal workers will have access to health-care benefits starting on their first day on the job, according to the company.
The company reported seasonal work is often a path to long-term employment, noting that seasonal employees who remain as employees see an average pay increase of 15 percent in their first three years of employment.
Among other major retailers, Target in September said it would bring in roughly 100,000 seasonal employees, similar to the prior year. J.C. Penney plans to add 10,000 seasonal workers, also matching its 2023 head count.
Macy’s, however, said it will add over 31,500 seasonal positions this year across its Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores, as well as its distribution centers. Last year, the company added 38,000.
