On Friday at the National Rifle Association convention in Atlanta, President Donald Trump reaffirmed his campaign pledges to expand gun ownership rights and roll back some of the restrictions instituted under his Democratic predecessor.
“The eight-year assault on your Second Amendment freedoms has come to a crashing end,” Trump stated to the enthusiastic crowd. “I will never, ever infringe on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Never ever.”
Last year, candidate Trump benefited greatly from the NRA’s endorsement and $30 million worth of campaign support,
Trump praised the organization and its leaders, including executive vice president Wayne LaPierre, and vowed to uphold his promises.
“You have a true friend and champion in the White House. No longer will federal agencies be coming after law-abiding gun owners,” Trump said in his speech.
He became the first president since Ronald Reagan to address the NRA’s annual meeting.
Since taking office, Trump has taken steps to roll back certain Obama-era restrictions on gun use and sales, but has not yet made a concerted effort to relax current gun laws.
