Patagonia launched a campaign urging residents of Utah to call Utah Governor Gary Herbert to “keep public lands in public hands” and retract his call for the Trump administration to rescind the Bears Ears National Monument and reduce the Grand Staircase Escalante Monument.
“This land grab would open wilderness and recreation areas to oil and gas development and could eliminate access to the diverse landscape that makes Utah unique,” Patagonia wrote on a microsite.
The company is using Phone2Action, a site enabling supporters to directly connect with elected officials. Patagonia will use Facebook and Twitter to share the Phone2Action link, according to Outside Magazine.
Patagonia, which was the first brand to declare its intention to boycott the Outdoor Retailer show over Utah’s land policies, has donated more than $750,000 to organizations working for monument designation, including the Bears Ears Intertribal Coalition and Friends of Cedar Mesa.
“We’ve seen that the best way to get the attention of politicians is to show up to their meetings in person, or to call them directly,” Patagonia spokesperson Corley Kenna told Outside Magazine. “That’s why this platform drives phone calls rather than emails.”
