Quest Diagnostics Incorporated, the world’s largest database of clinical lab results and parent to Blueprint For Athletes, which provides actionable diagnostics for athletes, experienced a data break that affected roughly 34,000 individuals.
Quest had been investigating the presence of an unauthorized third party on its network since late November 2016. Then, on December 12, the company issued that it had sent notices to all 34,000 individuals whose Protected Health Information (PHI) was accessed during the breach.
The accessed data included name, date of birth, lab results and, in some instances, telephone numbers. The information did not include Social Security numbers, credit card information, insurance or other financial information. There is no indication that individuals’ information has been misused in any way.
Since Blueprint for Athletes users receive results through MyQuest by Care360, the company said these individuals “may have been impacted by the data breach.” Kim Gorode, manager of external communications at Quest Diagnostics, added, “All impacted people have been notified via mail. Quest Diagnostics is taking this matter very seriously and is committed to the privacy and security of patients’ personal information. We deeply regret this incident and any inconvenience or concern it may have caused.”
