Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) is relocating its store at 102nd Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta to a larger location in the Edmonton Brewery District that will open in spring 2017.
The new, purpose-built location is being developed on 104th Avenue and 120th Street.
MEC’s new two-storey 38,000-square-foot store will enable the outdoor retail co-operative to better serve its 197,000 Edmonton members with an expanded product assortment, improved merchandising and a more accessible location.
“We’ve outgrown our existing space and have been planning to relocate the store for several years,” said MEC CFO Sandy Treagus. “We seized the opportunity to relocate MEC Edmonton to the Brewery District, as it allows us to remain in the core and to be an integral part of a vibrant mixed-use urban development.”
Currently in the planning stages, the design of MEC’s new Edmonton store will be finalized over the next three months and will keep with the ‘developed over time’ character of the Brewery District.
The store will be built to achieve a minimum of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification.
“Edmontonians embrace being active outdoors camping, biking and running, and skiing are just a few of the popular activities they do that MEC supports,” said Treagus. “We’re excited to start our third decade of operations in Edmonton and to welcome existing and new MEC members to our Brewery District location.”
Construction of MEC’s new Edmonton store is set to begin next April, and span approximately one year. Until then, it will be business as usual at the 102nd Avenue store, as MEC works to seamlessly transition from the old location to the new one.
With its heritage backdrop, pedestrian-friendly walkways and commitment to green building, the Brewery District will include such tenants as City Market, Shoppers Drug Mart and GoodLife. The development will be adjacent to the future Valley Line light rail transit with a stop at 120th Street.
The Edmonton Brewery District is a mixed-use development project of First Capital Realty and Sun Life Investment Management.
