Reebok International, which is owned by Adidas, has acquired the U.K.-based, boxing and martial arts brand, Luta. Perhaps more importantly, Reebok acquired Fight for Peace, a non-profit that uses boxing and martial arts, combined with education and personal development, to realize the potential of young people in communities that suffer from crime and violence.
Both Luta and Fight for Peace were founded by Luke Dowdney.
In 2000, Dowdney, a British amateur boxer, founded a small boxing club in Complexo da Maré, a deprived area of Rio de Janeiro. The club grew into Fight For Peace, which opened its London Academy in 2007 as well as other satellite projects across the world to help more than 100,000 young people.
In May 2011, Dowdney launched Luta with the purpose of creating socially responsible sportswear and was developed following consultations with more than 300 pro athletes, leading sports apparel designers and top performance fabric technicians.
LUTA first launched in London in 2011, with its U.S. launch in August 2013. Half of Lutas profits go directly supports Fight for Peace. Last year, Luta marked its New York City launch with the introduction of its Life Changing Project, an empowerment project with four local NYC boxing and martial arts gyms.
We are honored to be able to establish this partnership with Fight for Peace and include Luta within our sporting portfolio, said Matt OToole, president, Reebok. The work Luke and the team have done over the years to help young people who are growing up with tremendous challenges, surrounded by drugs and violence, is remarkable and is something we are looking forward to supporting and expanding so that together we can help even more young people at risk.
Said Dowdney, Our new partnership with Reebok and its acquisition of Luta is incredibly exciting for Fight for Peace and its future. Both organizations share a strong belief in the power of fitness and training and the impact it can have on young peoples lives, particularly those at risk of being involved in crime and violence. Working with Reebok allows us to continue to build awareness for Fight for Peace, as well as secure a long-term funding structure for us to develop our international growth and development.
Further details of the partnership were not being disclosed last week.
