New Balance officially broke ground Monday, June 24, on its new headquarters building, which will help anchor a 14-acre, $500 million redevelopment project in the Allston Brighton area of the city.
New Balance’s new 250,000-square-foot headquarters will be the first building to emerge at the Boston Landing office and athletic complex being developed along the Mass Turnpike on the western edge of Boston. The development will eventually include a hotel, 1.4 acres of open space, a new commuter rail stop, additional office and retail space and a 300,000-square-foot sports complex.
The sports complex will include a 200-meter indoor track fitted with hydraulic lifts so it can be adjusted to accommodate a variety of activities. The complex will also include elite training facilities for baseball and hockey, including an NHL-sized rink. The Boston Bruins are said to be exploring plans to open a practice facility at the complex,
“Washington could take a cue from what’s been accomplished here in Boston,” New Balance's Chairman Jim Davis told The Boston Globe at the groundbreaking ceremony, where he was joined by Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
