The Puma King franchise was founded in 1966 with the original King, made famous by many soccer icons. Recently, Puma designers went into the company’s archives and are reintroducing an updated version of the King family mainstay, the 1999 King Indoor, to find favor with today’s consumer, outside of sports, in a lifestyle version of the shoe.
The King Indoor, a “subcultural status symbol” and street-style star of the time, was adopted as the shoe for kids throughout Europe. It’s a shoe that brings the meaning of many things to many different people. German designer Jil Sander added her spin to the shoe’s to harmonize with her signature minimal-chic aesthetic with the heritage of the King, marking one of the first fashion-sport collaborations.
Puma ceased producing othe King Indoor in 2015.
Puma has reissued the King Indoor for 2024 with a stitched leather upper, a pitch-inspired lace shroud and a gum outsole. Gold accents appear throughout, including on the “King” wordmark logo on the upper.
