The NFL uniform and apparel rights, which Nike has controlled since 2012, are up for renewal for the 2028 season. Bidding is “open and active,” with “several” companies vying for the contract.
According to the Sports Business Journal, Nike has the “inside track,” but its financial challenges could prevent the contract renewal. Nike’s contract lasts through the 2027 NFL season.
During a presentation held with NFL owners during this week’s annual closed-door meetings in Atlanta, GA, the NFL reportedly discussed renewing its deal with Nike.
Under Nike’s oversight, several teams, including the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans, have undergone significant uniform makeovers during the offseason. Uniform rules were adjusted to allow the use of three different helmet styles, allowing teams to choose between wearing throwback or alternate Nike designs.
Nike took over the NFL contract from Reebok in 2012 and renewed it in 2018. Reebok held exclusive apparel rights since 2002.
Before Reebok, no league-wide deal was in place with the teams that allowed them to choose their own uniform provider. Adidas, Nike, Puma, Reebok, and Starter had uniform deals under the prior set-up.
