Puma plans to release a modernized rendition of the OG Speedcat, a shoe that boasts a rich history in Formula 1 racing, having been worn by numerous Grand Prix champions. This iconic sneaker is characterized by its sleek design and performance materials, making it a must-have for sneaker collectors and fashion enthusiasts.
For the initial release in 2024, the low-top Speedcat returns with suede finishing in black and red, a nod to iconic F1 racing teams and racewear uniforms of the early 2000s. The re-issue also features an embroidered cat detail on the toe and gold logo on the tongue and above the Formstrip.
Puma created the shoe in 1999. Today’s lifestyle reiteration stems from the “fireproof racing footwear worn by Grand Prix drivers in the ’80s and ’90s, with racing-inspired lines and aerodynamic silhouette infusing fashion with sneaker culture.
The original Speedcat is Puma’s best-selling shoe of all time.
For the 2024 re-launch campaign, Puma partnered with the retailer Naked Copenhagen, “known for its global female voice,” through a woman-led campaign, which “celebrates what it means to be a pioneer off the track and on it … honors what it takes to be a female leader.”
The face of the campaign is the stylist and creator Sierra Rena, “who embodies fearless self-expression, an attitude built on the pioneers before her, and a determination to inspire future generations positively,” said Puma. “Honoring the legacy of the Speedcat, the campaign presents the silhouette as a symbol of empowerment and innovation.”
Puma is gearing up for the grand launch of the Speedcat, starting with an exclusive pre-release event on June 19 at Naked Copenhagen’s Paris store in Le Marais. The shoe will also be available online at nakedcph.com and in Naked Copenhagen stores in Copenhagen and Aarhus. From June 29, the Speedcat will be available on PUMA.com and various global retailers, including Kith, Atmos, END, SNS, and other exclusive accounts. Puma will release addtional colorways of the Speedcat later this year.
