Adidas SPZL continues the label’s 10th-anniversary celebration with the Decade pack, a footwear release of four styles from Gary Aspend that pays homage to “all things archival Three Stripes.”
As tenth-anniversary editions, Aspend subtly reworked four iconic Adidas SPZL silhouettes from the past ten years: Blackburn, Lacombe, Garwen, and Ardwick, shown below left to right.
The Blackburn SPZL, first released in 2019. The updated version combines two previous iterations of the original Blackburn SPZL and Blackburn Ewood SPZL silhouettes with forest green suede upper, a night navy tongue and flock stripes, detailed with gold foil prints of the Lancashire rose and the SPZL Mod Trefoil.
Aspend reintroduces the Lacombe SPZL in white, chalk white and dark blue, with new features including a breathable mesh tongue with patent leather branding, “synonymous with several vintages Made in France shoes,” and a suede toe bumper, paying homage to Adidas court shoes.
The Garwen SPZL, a silhouette initially inspired by the Adidas Brisbane leisure shoe, is updated in a light brown, putty and gum colorway. The upper is leather with matching suede accents, perforations on the toe box and metal Trefoil branding.
Finally, the Ardwick SPZL, a sought-after collectors shoe, was first introduced in 2014 in a limited edition run of 500 pairs in partnership with Manchester retailer Oi Polloi (since closed) as part of the first SPZL collection. The anniversary version comes with an adjusted shape, reworked T Toe, new tongue branding and flock stripes with a revised chocolate brown foxing (it was black on the 2014 release) against the shoe’s “now iconic moss green colorway.” Staying true to the original 2014 version, the upper uses a reversed leather, giving individual fluctuations in the color from pair to pair.
The Adidas SPZL anniversary collection drops on May 24.
