Mizuno Corp.’s sales grew 8.1 percent in the fiscal second quarter ended September 30 and 23.8 percent in the half. The Japanese-based sporting goods sales and profits reached record levels in the six months, with sales increasing across all geographies and in all its main business categories.

SGB Media calculated the second-quarter figures by subtracting first-quarter results from the reported first half results.

In the second quarter, sales grew to ¥57.3 billion ($378 mm) from ¥53 billion a year ago. Operating profits declined 7.0 percent to ¥4.3 billion, while ordinary profits gained 7.5 percent to ¥4.3 billion, and net income grew 6.90 percent to ¥3.1 billion.

By region, sales in the quarter grew 9.9 percent to ¥35.6 billion in Japan, gained 1.2 percent to ¥8.4 billion in the Americas, declined 4.4 percent to ¥6.5 billion in EMEA, and gained 23.6 percent to ¥6.8 billion in the Asia/Oceania region.

Among categories, sales increased 9.1 percent to ¥18 billion in footwear, advanced 17.3 percent to ¥15.6 billion in apparel, increased 2.9 percent to ¥14.3 billion in equipment, and gained 1.1 percent to ¥9.4 billion in the service/others category.

Among sports focuses, baseball product sales climbed 17.9 percent to ¥11.2 billion; running sales fell 21.3 percent to ¥5.6 billion; golf sales slipped 2.3 percent to ¥8.5 billion; football (soccer) sales increased 64.3 percent to ¥4.6 billion; indoor revenues (i.e., volleyball, badminton, table tennis, basketball) jumped 54.8 percent to ¥4.8 billion; work/business sales were flat at ¥2.5 billion; and indoor facilities sales were up 2.8 percent to ¥7.4 billion.

In the six months, revenues rose 15.4 percent to ¥114.5 billion, operating profit advanced 14.2 percent to ¥9.3 billion, ordinary profit grew 23.5 percent to ¥10.6 billion, and net income improved 21.0 percent to ¥7.8 billion.

By region in the six months, sales in its home market of Japan rose 9.8 percent to ¥68.2 billion. Mizuno noted that baseball, football and work were categories performing well in the half in Japan

Overseas, sales gained 22.5 percent to ¥18.8 billion in the Americas, advanced 16.9 percent to ¥11.2 billion in the EMEA region, and climbed 36.6 percent to 14.4 billion in the Asia/Oceania region. Mizuno said golf steadily grew in overseas markets while competitive sports such as football (soccer) and volleyball performed well globally.

Among categories, footwear sales in the half gained 24.9 percent to ¥36.0 billion, apparel increased 15.2 percent to ¥30.6 billion, equipment sales gained 8.9 percent to ¥30.0 billion, and service/others increased 10.2 percent to ¥17.9 billion.

Among sports focuses in the half, baseball sales grew 19.5 percent to ¥22.8 billion, golf sales advanced 5.1 percent to ¥18.4 billion, running sales gained 8.1 percent to ¥12.5 billion, football jumped 73.6 percent to ¥8.5 billion, indoor sales climbed 40.3 percent to ¥8.1 billion, work/business sales grew 16.5 percent to ¥5.5 billion, and sports facilities sales gained 6.1 percent to ¥13.5 billion.
