The country's
first Michael Jordan “Twenty-Three” athletic apparel and footwear
store will be opened at University Village Marketplace on Maxwell Street in Chicago. According to a press released from University
Village Marketplace, Northbrook, Ill.-based retailer Sportsland has leased
2,800 square feet at 1313 and 1315 S. Halsted, with plans to develop the
Jordan-themed store in a shared space with a new urban retail concept called
AKIN. Both are scheduled to open in June 2009.

“We're
excited to be a part of University Village Marketplace,” said Sportsland
CFO Lou Karnezis in a statement. “It's a great location that was personally approved by
Michael Jordan. Not only is it on the south end of the UIC campus, but it
offers easy access to downtown Chicago and attractions like the United Center,
as well as the suburbs via several major expressways.”

Twenty-Three,
named after Jordan's
signature number, will carry exclusive lines of men's footwear and apparel,
said Karnezis. Locations currently operate in Berlin,
London and Paris.

AKIN will
carry footwear (Adidas, Converse, Nike, Puma, Vans) and apparel (Crooks &
Castles, IM King, Kiks Tyo, Wrong Wroks) for men and women, according to
Karnezis.
