TaylorMade-Adidas Golf is cutting 170 jobs, or about 12% of its local work force, as it integrates its new Ashworth acquisition. TaylorMade acquired Ashworth Inc., also based Carlsbad, CA, for $73 million on Nov. 21. According to the North County Times in Southern California, a spokesman said the positions to be cut included administrative and accounting jobs.

TaylorMade has about 1,400 employees in Carlsbad and 2,050 worldwide. Spokesman Scott Leightman told the newspaper that the company would eliminate the positions through a combination of layoffs and attrition.

“In order to bring (Ashworth) back to competence, we couldn't operate at the status quo,” Leightman said.

He said the acquisition means fewer layoffs than if Ashworth had remained independent.
