Approximately 200 protesters showed up at the state capitol in Phoenix, AZ Monday to protest the closing of 13 state parks by the end of June, according to abc15.com, the website for the local ABC affiliate.

The protesters carried signs reading “Closed parks? Shame on you!” to protest the Arizona State Board’s vote last month to close te parks. The state has already closed or transferred operations at eight other state parks.

Protesters argued further closings will cause hardship for rural communities and are backing legislation that would raise annual vehicle registration fees to help fund the parks.

The protest was organized in part by the Sierra Club Arizona Chapter.
