Zappos was the top company in the sporting goods space to land on Fortune Magazine's annual list of the Top 100 Companies to Work For. The e-commerce site landed at 7, up from 15 a year earlier. Among the others on the list were REI, landing at 9; and W.L. Gore, 31.

The magazine noted that Zappos had 2009 reported revenues of $1.19 billion in 2009, job growth of 32%, and an employee count of 1,843.

REI moved up from 14 in last year's rank. It had 2009 reported revenues of$1.46 billion, negative job growth of 1%; and an employee count of 9.4 million. REI is one of only five organizations to be recognized on the list each year since its inception in 1998. It is also the highest ranked of the six Washington State-based companies on the 2011 list.


W.L. Gore had reported 2009 revenue of $2.5 billion, job growth of 1% and an employee count of 5,770.

Among other retail brands, Container Store was 21, Nordstrom came in at 74; Men's Wearhouse, 87; and Aeropostale, 94.
