Yue Yuen Industrial Holdings Ltd. said more than 1,000 factory workers in a southern Chinese city went on strike Tuesday, demanding better social security payments.

The worker and labor groups said the workers are upset because the company failed to pay full social security and housing fund contributions. The strike started on April 5 and resumed Monday when the demands were not met.

The workers reportedly took to the streets of Dongguan before being stopped by local police, according to a statement from the Hong Kong-listed company. Yue Yuen said 600 workers staged a demonstration on Monday, though Hong Kong-based China Labor Bulletin put the number at more than 10,000 and New York-based China Labor Watch at “tens of thousands,” according to a report from Bloomberg.
