The Trump administration on Sunday night proposed providing some school personnel with “rigorous” firearms training while intending to establish a federal commission to examine other proposals, such as raising the age to purchase some weapons,
The Justice Department will also provide an unspecified amount of grants to states that want to train teachers to carry guns in school. Such measures are already in place in a small number of states.
The White House is also backing legislation proposed in Congress aimed at providing more data for the background check system. The proposals are supported by the National Rifle Association (NRA).
Measures to raise the minimum age for buying guns to 21 from 18 or require background checks for guns bought at gun shows or on the internet will be studied by a commission headed by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, the officials said.
“There is no time to waste,” DeVos told reporters during a conference call Sunday night. “No student, no family, no teacher and no school should have to live the horror of Parkland or Sandy Hook or Columbine again.”
