For the fourth consecutive year, Walmart will be closed again on Thanksgiving Day is 2023.
“Thanksgiving is such a special day during a very busy season. We want you to spend that day at home with family and loved ones,” said Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner in a video message to associates on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Walmart is the first major U.S. retailer to announce it will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on November 23 this year.
While Walmart and some of the larger retailers in the U.S. used to remain open, be it on limited hours on Thanksgiving to jumpstart Black Friday sales, many closed in 2020 for the holiday when the pandemic required social distancing and retailers cited appreciation to their employees as a reason for closing.
The trend for retailers to close on Thanksgiving Day has continued, with more companies opting in as a measure of support for store employees. In 2021, Target announced that “moving forward,” its stores would be closed on Thanksgiving Day.
Costco, BJ’s, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Home Depot, and TJX Companies were also among the retailers that closed on Thanksgiving in 2022.
