USA Weekend Magazine and The Outdoor Foundation have partnered to start a new charitable grant program tied to the annual Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of volunteer service. The award aims to encourage and reward those projects that successfully get youth out-of-doors and active. The partners will give a $1,500 donation to one volunteer’s chosen charity in recognition of a project that inspires kids to take part in outdoor activities, gets them to connect with nature or teaches them the health benefits of being outside.

“We are thrilled to partner with USA Weekend Magazine on this terrific program that will hopefully inspire millions to participate in a Make A Difference Day project that is focused on getting youth outdoors, active and healthy,” said Christine Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation. “This is a great opportunity for young people to discover, explore and experience the wonders of the great outdoors.”

Created by USA Weekend Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. The next event is Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008. Millions have participated. In 2007, 3 million people cared enough about their communities to volunteer on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns-helping more than 20 million people.
