United Sporting Companies has hired two new executives, Chief Information Officer John P. McCarthy and Chief Purchasing Officer Scott Walker, as part of its leadership team.


With over 40 years of combined experience, USC said both John and Scott bring to the table the “vision, capability, and experience to help guide Ellett Brothers and Jerry's Sport Center in pursuit of the enhancement of technology and purchasing in the Outdoors Sporting Goods Industry.”

The added leadership they bring to us will help provide and support the continued growth of United Sporting Companies,” states Hewitt Grant, United Sporting Companies CEO. “Both John and Scott will be relocating their families to Chapin,” Hewitt adds.


John McCarthy has over twenty years of experience in building and leading the technology capabilities of organizations. During his career he has deployed new ERP systems, led the IT integration of acquired companies, improved e-commerce capabilities, directed lean initiatives, and crafted the strategic vision for IT. John joins us from Stanley Black & Decker where he spent the past eight years of his career. In his most recent role at Stanley, John was the Chief Information Officer for the $1B Global Industrial segment. Prior to joining Stanley, John spent over a decade in various technology roles at Genuity (a leading Internet service provider), GTECH Corporation (a global leader in gaming technology and services), and the University of Rhode Island.


Scott Walker has over twenty years of purchasing, merchandising, complex contract negotiation, marketing and leadership experience in the Outdoor Sporting Goods industry. Scott joins us from The Sports Authority where he was the VP of Camping, Hunting, Fishing, and Water Sports. He has previously worked as Divisional Merchandising Manager for Bass Pro Shops and as Vice President at Galyan's Trading Company. Scott demonstrated the ability to develop and execute profitable growth strategies while providing strong leadership and coaching for the buyers and merchants that have been on his team. He fully understands the value of distribution and has influential relationships with many key suppliers in our industry.


John holds a BS degree in Computer Electrical Engineering and an MBA, both from the University of Rhode Island.


Scott is a graduate of West Virginia School of Technology and is a former Captain in the United States Army.
