On Saturday, January 24, Tubbs Snowshoes and the Vermont Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation held their second annual 'Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer' Snowshoe Series at Stratton Mountain.
The event, consisting of both a snowshoe fun run as well as an easy snowshoe walk, raises money from the participants' pledges as well as direct donations. All the money raised through the event goes to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and its local Affiliates, to benefit breast cancer research, education and screening.
Cold temperatures could not keep the public away from the popular event. “Even with temperatures hovering around zero degrees all day, we had more than 250 participants”, said Kathy Murphy, General Manager for Tubbs. “The course wound up and down and around the Stratton Nordic Center, so all the participants could enjoy the pristine views of the Green Mountain Range at Stratton Mountain. It was cold but beautiful and sunny all day,” said Murphy, “just a perfect day for snowshoeing.”
In the Fun Run, Stephen Judice of Saranac Lake, NY, a Team Tubbs member won the 3K Race in the male division by over 3 minutes and Erica Jacobsen of Newburyport, MA won in the women's division with a time of 14:13:10.
“In 2003 we organized three events at three different sites across the United States and raised over $36,000 for the cause”, said Murphy. “The success of the events last year prompted us to increase the number of events in 2004 to five events and target a fundraising goal of $100,000. In addition to the Stratton Mountain event, the series will also take place in Frisco, CO; Minneapolis, MN; Mt. Hood, OR and in Salt Lake City, UT. With $15,000 already in the bank, we can see that we are well on the way to yet another successful event series.”
Tubbs would like to express their thanks to Stratton Mountain, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Cabot, and REI for their sponsorship.
