The White House said Monday that President Donald Trump supported efforts to improve federal background checks for gun purchases. The news came days after a shooting killed 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, FL.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Trump spoke with Republican Senator John Cornyn about a bipartisan bill that he and Democratic Senator Chris Murphy introduced to improve federal compliance with criminal background checks.

“While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the president is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Monday.

Cornyn and Murphy introduced their bill to improve federal background checks last November, days after a gunman killed more than two dozen people in a church in Texas. Among other changes, the legislation would hold federal agencies accountable for keeping relevant information out of the database. It would also establish an initiative to better monitor gun buyers with records of domestic abuse.
