The Timberland Company posted significant reductions in company-wide greenhouse gas emissions, successfully reducing emissions by 36% in 2009 and is on pace to reach its goal of a 50% emissions reduction by the end of 2010.

The company said this reduction was attained primarily through increased energy efficiency at Timberland’s retail locations, renewable energy procurement at its distribution facilities and decreases in employee air travel.

Other precautions taken have involved the use of organic cotton, sourcing from environmentally-responsible tanneries and a commitment to approximately 82,000 community service hours.

In addition, TBL has introduced it three-pronged approach to further contribute to emissions reductions in its supply chain.  Those three factors include the use of the Green Index rating system which advises both developers and consumers regarding green strategies; the collection of information from suppliers regarding materials used, as well as improved distribution practices.
