The Bon-Ton Stores announced comparable store sales for the four weeks ended August 2, 2003 increased 0.1%. Total sales for the month decreased 0.5% to $38.9 million versus $39.1 million reported for the same period last year.

For the second quarter, total sales decreased 0.5% to $153.1 million from $153.9 million. Comparable store sales increased 0.2%. Year-to-date total sales decreased 3.3% to $294.2 million from $304.4 million reported for the same period last year. Comparable store sales decreased 2.7%.

Baireuther, Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer, commented, “July sales reflected our in-stock position and consumer purchases of seasonal items in keeping with the warmer weather. We continue to offer value to our customer with broad assortments across all categories. Areas with sales increases for the month were home, intimate, petites, juniors, accessories and womens. We are successfully transitioning into fall with a concentration of fresh, new merchandise and remain focused on maintaining receipts in line with sales.”
