Strava is looking for a new CEO after Co-Founder and CEO Michael Horvath called it quits, again. This is the second time for Horvath after walking away as CEO in 2013 for family reasons before returning to lead the company six years later.
Horvath and Mark Gainey co-founded Strava in 2009 as a social community that tracks activities in the running and cycling space and allows users to share their activities. The company reportedly has over 100 million registered users.
Horvath apparently believes the company needs fresh leadership to take it to the next level.
Last month, Strava acquired Fatmap, a mobile app for outdoor enthusiasts, giving its subscribers access to the full offering. Read SGB’s coverage of the story here.
Fatmap has reportedly built a global proprietary 3D mapping technology that enables all of Strava’s services for active individuals to discover and plan an outdoor experience with curated local guides, points of interest and safety information.
“In 2022, nearly ten million routes were saved and recommended by active individuals around the world on Strava. Maps and tools are powerful unlocks to deliver daily value and motivate our active community,” Horvath said at the time of the acquisition announcement. “We have a shared vision with Fatmap to inspire more people to move by empowering them to discover and experience the joy of the outdoors. For us, the opportunity to reimagine the purpose of maps and how they inspire exploration is an outsized advantage for a differentiated outdoor experience.”
