Stein Mart, Inc.’s comparable store sales for the four-week period ended May 28, 2011 increased 0.7 percent. Total sales for the period were $98.5 million, a decrease of 0.2 percent from $98.7 million in the same period in 2010. For the year-to-date, comparable store sales increased 1.3 percent and total sales increased 0.6 percent to $402.0 million.
Home, ladies career sportswear, accessories, and mens tailored clothing and furnishings posted the strongest comparable sales, while ladies special sizes and mens sportswear posted weaker trends. Geographically, May sales were strongest in the Western and Northeast markets.
The company operated 261 stores at the end of May compared to 265 at the same time last year. No new stores were opened and one store located in Succasunna, N.J. was closed during the month.
