SRAM, the Chicago-based bike parts manufacturer, has acquired Ochain, the Italian manufacturer of chainring spiders that enable a bike’s chainring to move independently of the cranks, improving mountain bike suspension feel and performance.

Terms were not disclosed.

According to SRAM, the Ochain name will remain the same, and they are “preserving the Ochain team, culture and location.” Additionally, Fabrizio Dragoni, who founded Ochain in 2019, will continue to lead the brand from a new, dedicated facility in Italy.

SRAM reported that the chainring spiders will remain unchanged for now, but the company will release a four-bolt XX Eagle T-Type chainring of its own to go along with the Ochain active spider collection

“We started thinking about how to make descending better through drivetrain development,” said Flynn George, product manager at SRAM. “We found that Ochain delivered unmatched improvements in traction, stability and ride feel. It quiets down the chassis, reducing auditory feedback and pedal feedback. On the trail, that means improved traction and control.”

The acquisition sees Ochain join SRAM’s brand portfolio, which includes RockShox, Time, Hammerhead and Velocio.

Ochain is currently headquartered in Varese, Lombardia, Italy.
