Sports Direct International plc pledged to pay its directly employed UK employees and directly engaged casual workers above the National Minimum Wage starting Jan. 1, 2016.
The U.K.’s largest sporting goods retailer estimated the cost in relation to these direct employees and casual workers and other related costs and knock on costs are likely to be around £10 milliion on an annualised basis.
The commitment comes three weeks after The Guardian newspaper published an investigative report that concluded many Sports Direct workers earn less than minimum wage and amid intense criticism of zero-hour wage contracts used by many UK employers to hire temporary and part-time workers.
