Shopko confirmed that plans to close 39 of its 363 stores by the end of February. Bloomberg reported that the Wisconsin-based retailer was making preparations for a bankruptcy filing.

Bloomberg said the preparations for bankruptcy come as efforts to find a buyer have stalled. The general merchandise chain, owned by Sun Capital Partners Inc., could still reach agreement on an out-of-court restructuring, according to the report.

The closures of the 39 stores overwhelmingly impact the smaller Shopko Hometown format, which focuses on 15,000-square-foot to 35,000-square-foot stores in smaller towns.
