Sears Holdings said the company will be closing more than 70 additional stores in 2018 as the company’s sales continue to erode.

The retailer has identified 100 unprofitable stores in total, and it will begin closing sales at 72 of these stores “in the near future.”

“We continue to evaluate our network of stores, which are a critical component in our transformation, and will make further adjustments as needed and as warranted,” Sears said in a statement announcing its first-quarter results.

In the quarter ended May 5, the company reported a net loss attributable to Holdings’ shareholders of $424 million, or $3.93 loss per share, for the first quarter of 2018. This compares to net income attributable to Holdings’ shareholders of $245 million, or $2.29, reported for the first quarter of 2017, which included a gain of $492 million recognized in conjunction with the sale of the Craftsman brand. Adjusted EBITDA was a loss of $225 million in the first quarter of 2018, as compared to a loss of $220 million in the prior year first quarter.

The company generated total revenues of approximately $2.9 billion during the first quarter of 2018, compared with revenues of $4.2 billion in the prior year quarter, with store closures contributing to nearly two thirds of the decline. Total comparable store sales declined 11.9 percent percent during the quarter, comprised of a 9.5 percent decline at Kmart and a 13.4 percent decline at Sears. While total comparable store sales declined, the company did experience positive comparable store sales at both Kmart and Sears in several categories, including apparel, footwear and jewelry.
