REI Co-op has promoted Cameron Janes to chief operating officer (COO), effective immediately. Previously, he was REI’s chief commercial officer.

“I am delighted to announce Cameron’s promotion to chief operating officer,” said CEO Eric Artz. In this new role, Cameron will continue driving forward bold initiatives to unify our operations while placing a strong emphasis on our people-first approach. His commitment to enhancing the experience for employees, member, and customers will ensure we deliver exceptional service and connection at every touchpoint of our business.”

As COO, Janes will extend his leadership beyond commercial oversight, which includes responsibility for stores, digital commerce, sales, customer support, and physical place teams. He adds fulfillment and logistics operations to his responsibilities, leading REI’s experiences division, which includes adventure travel, day tours and classes.

“For more than 85 years, the co-op has set the standard as the leader in specialty outdoor retail. I feel incredibly honored to be able to take on a greater role in leading an organization with such a powerful purpose – to inspire and enable a life outside for everyone,” said Janes. “By bringing together our operations into one unified division, we are not only enhancing our ability to serve our teams, members, and customers more efficiently but also positioning ourselves for innovation and growth. I am excited to work closely with Eric and the entire leadership team as we continue to shape the future of REI.”

The company said that Janes, who joined REI in January 2022 as senior vice president and chief commercial officer, brings a wealth of digital and physical retail experience from his previous roles at Amazon and Walmart.com.
