Los Angeles, April 22, 2020 — Thousand, creators of classically-designed and innovative bicycle helmets, is proud to announce its commitment to becoming a climate positive brand by offsetting 110% of its annual carbon emissions. In 2019, Thousand partnered with Climate Neutral, an independent non-profit organization working to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world, to measure, reduce, and completely offset its carbon emissions and be a carbon neutral business.
“As a Public Benefit Corporation, Thousand has always been built around values of sustainability and social impact”, said Thousand CEO and founder Gloria Hwang. “We’re going above and beyond to become climate positive and offset 110% of our annual carbon emissions because when it comes to sustainability, we know that we have to do something, now – as a company; as a community; and as individuals.”
To create a net positive impact on the planet, Thousand started by measuring its carbon footprint across each level of its supply chain, from factory production to worldwide shipping and daily office activity. With an accurate understanding of its emission measurements, Thousand is now focusing on its reduction efforts with short-term initiatives to reduce emissions from inbound and outbound transportation, as well as individual employee emissions. In striving to reduce carbon emissions by 17% in 2020, Thousand has opened a European warehouse to cut down on transportation costs and distances. At an individual level, Thousand offers its employees a commuter benefits program to encourage eco-friendly ways to get to work and reduce employee commute emissions by 2-4% in 2020.
Thousand will completely offset all emissions it cannot reduce by investing in forestry, renewable energy, and transportation projects that capture and absorb carbon in the atmosphere. Further, the brand will offset an additional 10% of its annual carbon emissions to create a net positive impact on the environment. While Thousand is currently measuring and reducing its carbon footprint, it expects to offset 110% of its carbon emissions from the 2020 business year, making this its first climate positive year.
Thousand originally started as a Kickstarter in 2015 and became a member of 1% for the Planet in its first operational year, committing 1% of its revenue to environmental restoration and educational projects every year since. Now, Thousand is not only lessening its impact on the environment by offsetting 100% of its own emissions, but the brand is adding a community-based proponent to its sustainability efforts. An interactive voting platform on Thousand’s website, launching on Earth Day (April 22), will let consumers determine where the additional 10% of offsets is dedicated to, like rehabilitating deforested areas or developing wind and solar energy. Subscribing to Thousand’s email list allows users to cast their vote and receive a practical guide for how to lower carbon emissions in their lives.
“We are excited to give individuals an opportunity to activate their environmental advocacy,” said Hwang. “Our hope is to inspire fans to reevaluate their own carbon footprint and implement change in their daily lives to help protect our planet.”
