Andy and Bax, the Portland, OR-based retailer of camping equipment and military surplus gear, is closing after 78 years.

The retailer announced the closing and going-out-of-business sale on its website and Facebook page along with a sign on the side of the building at 324 SE Grand Avenue.

A 2012 interview by the Oregonian noted that Andy and Bax was founded in 1945 by Edgar Baxter, who sold military surplus goods out of the trunk of his car. Within a few years, he operated out of a storefront on Union Street (now Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) and partnered with Andy Anderson. In 1969, there was a fire, and the building was destroyed. Baxter and Anderson relocated to its present location.

The Baxter family still owns the business.
